TEAM 116 supports virginia tech

Our History

Welcome to the Herndon High School / NASA Headquarters FIRST Robotics Team, also known as Epsilon Delta, Team 116, along with its VEX sub-team #116. We participate annually in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) and the FIRST Vex Challenge (FVC). The FRC competition is an intensive educational-enhancement program were the team spends six weeks brainstorming, designing, constructing and testing a moderately sized robot that will participate in some challenge, usually a game, presented at the competition. During this time period, students learn various skills regarding engineering, physics, mathematics, time management, leadership, teamwork, creativity, and problem solving, and put the skills they learn at school into practice. The FRC team has existed for 12 years (the first 3 at South Lakes, then moving to Herndon High School) under the current leadership of Cathy Bobzien and Joshua Ence, and has also enjoyed a strong partnership with the Headquarters of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration within the Robotics Educational Alliance program, and has enjoyed a great deal of support from local engineers, parents, and student alumni who have been through the FIRST program and have come back to help. The team consists of those participants already mentioned in addition to between thirty-five and forty-five students each year.

We are excited to say we had another strong performance at our most recent competition, the FIRST Championship Event in Atlanta (April 12-14). We competed with 85 other teams in the Galileo Division (one of four), and were among the top scoring teams, even earning the top Galileo score of 271 points. We were selected 6th over-all into the elimination rounds, and with our partners 1595 (The Dragons) and 93 (N.E.W. Apple Corp) we advanced to the division semi-finals (Sweet 16), the furthest we have ever gone. Please see us at our upcoming community events, including Herndon Festival!

We are proud to say we recently had one of our strongest showings ever at the NASA/VCU Regional (March 1-3) in Richmond. We finished 8th (of 66) after the qualification matches, with 6 wins and 2 losses. Unfortunately, we lost a heated quarter-final in the third (tie-breaking) match. Our robot stood out among the rest, earning the regionals longest row (7), most tubes placed during a match (7), highest average score (36.375), and, for the second year in a row, highest score (108)! Congratulations to the Koca Family on being named Volunteer(s) of the Year! Thanks Jim and Melinda for all the support you have given both us and VirginiaFIRST over the years, and of course team alumni Justin and Jen for your commitment both to 116 and VirginiaFIRST. We also earned two prestigious awards. Our animation team won it's 6th Autodesk Visualization Award for their 30-second computer animation. In addition, we won the Judge's Award for both our outstanding robot and community outreach program. Our next competition is the FIRST Championship Event in the Georgia Dome, in Atlanta from April 12-14
